Folk get promoted and other folk get fired every day. But no one is ever fired because they failed and did a lousy, lazy job and no one ever is promoted because they succeeded at a difficult job.  I.e., there is no connection of any kind (and certain not a cause and effect connection) between performance and promotion or demotion.
