There is a multi-part analysis on the GSE's that indicates they, esp. FRE, aren't in such parlous shape- see

I thoroughly enjoy reading this blog. I apologize that this comment is off topic. However, it seems from the content of this blog that you have an interest in ethical professional standards, education and informing folks of important underlying issues. I saw recently that there is discussion of allowing some universities to exempt their students from the preliminary actuarial exams.

I would be very interested in your views. Perhaps you might be interested in a blog post on the topic. It is a very unpopular idea among commenters at the Actuarial Outpost site.

"Feedback will be collected through September 10, 2009.
This date was selected to provide the Boards of the CIA, CAS, and SOA with member comments prior to each organization’s fall Board meeting. Comments received after this date will still be considered. Please submit your feedback along with your name and organizational affiliation to fem@actuarialdirectory.org."

As the professional competence of actuaries underlies the integrity of so many of our public institutions and private businesses, it seems that exempting actuarial students from preliminary exams would be a step in the wrong direction.

Sorry for the off topic comment.
