  1. If you’re interested in the effect of tax cuts vs spending cuts, I recommend Christina Romer’s article in the NYT. Romer was one of two authors of the paper showing “Tax increase of 1% of GDP reduces output over the next 3 years by nearly 3%”.

    Takeaways:
    – Increasing taxes decreases GDP, but spending cuts decrease GDP even more. Past studies have underestimated the effects of both spending and tax cuts.
    – “Tax increases on wealthier households probably have less of an effect on the economy than those on the poor or middle class.”
    – She’s not in favor of any form of fiscal austerity right now.
    – “Long-term considerations… point to a plan for reducing the deficit that combines spending cuts and tax increases. The cuts should spare valuable investment spending [in basic scientific research, education, and infrastructure].”
